Machinable Ceramics
Whilst having the attributes of good electrical and thermal
insulation, machinable ceramics can be machined using conventional
metal working tools and do not require diamond grinding. Turnaround
of a component can therefore be relatively fast, however, the
materials tend to be relatively weak and brittle compared with
other ceramics.
Properties
Machinable Ceramics can be machined into complicated
shapes with ordinary metalworking tools. They require neither
firing nor diamond grinding after machining. Lead times can
therefore be reduced and products brought to the marketplace
sooner than if conventional engineering ceramics were used.
The mechanical properties of machinable ceramics tend to be
lower than those of other ceramics.
